As shipping companies face pressure to reduce emissions while maintaining efficiency, data-driven decision-making has become critical. With fuel costs and environmental impact directly influencing profitability, reliable reporting and analytics are essential.
Wallenius Marine, a Swedish shipping company with a global fleet, needed a robust Business Intelligence (BI) solution to support accurate reporting, fuel optimisation, and strategic decision-making.
Wallenius Marine operates approximately 125 vessels across 15 trade routes spanning six continents, supported by a global inland distribution network, 66 processing centres and eight marine terminals. With operations on such a scale, both environmental impact and cost optimisation are key priorities.
The company was working with vast volumes of operational data but lacked a unified and reliable reporting system. Existingreporting tools and Excel-based analysis were insufficient for managing complex fuel consumption variables and operational performance metrics. The absence of an integrated solution limited the company's ability to fully trust its data and extract actionable insights.
To ensure accurate data collection and enable reliable decision-making, Wallenius Marine turned to Baltic Amadeus for a scalable and custom-built reporting and analytics solution.

Following an in-depth analysis, Baltic Amadeus proposed implementing a centralised Data Warehouse (DWH) alongside a custom Business Intelligence (BI) solution.
The new reporting and analytics platform integrated multiple critical data sources for fuel consumption optimisation, including weather data retrieved from hydrometeorological stations, vessel voyage and route data, and raw data collected from onboard vessel sensors. By consolidating vessel, voyage and weather data into a unified system, the platform enabled advanced analytics and comprehensive performance monitoring.
The data analytics model enabled Wallenius Marine to monitor vessel performance and implement preventive maintenance. Baltic Amadeus introduced role-based access control, ensuring only authorised users could access relevant vessel data. All data can now be processed, stored, managed, analysed, and visualised in one integrated environment, supporting accurate and timely business decisions.
The new BI analysis and reporting solution enables decision-makers to independently perform situational and discovery analyses. Data is presented through an intuitive dashboard that allows users to drill down into specific metrics while also providing a clear, high-level overview of operational performance. Large volumes of information are visualised through charts, graphs and pivot tables, enabling both summary insights and in-depth examination.
The integration of data-driven predictive models allows the company to identify potential operational risks in advance. This supports proactive fleet maintenance planning, including dry docking and hull and propeller servicing at the appropriate time. As a result, Wallenius Marine benefits from more reliable shipping operations, improved cost control and stronger environmental performance driven by accurate, trustworthy data.
