Situation  

After the successful launch of the PLOOM heated tobacco device, JTI Lithuania looked for ways to minimise manual work related to the device sales process. Since each PLOOM device sale requires manual verification for accuracy, increased sales have added pressure on processes and escalated maintenance costs. These rising costs constrain scalability and limit expansion opportunities into new markets.

To address this, we proposed a fully automated receipt verification process using Azure Vision AI, a technology that enables computers to replicate the human vision system. This AI-driven solution aims to streamline operations, reduce costs, and support JTI’s growth ambitions.

Solution  

The Azure AI Vision service provides access to advanced algorithms that process images and return information based on specific visual features. To implement this solution for JTI Lithuania’s receipt verification, we began with an analysis phase that included a workshop, process review, and validation rule definition to tailor the approach to JTI’s needs. Functional requirements were specified to guide development.

For implementation, we designed and built the system architecture, creating a recognition service, integrating it with Drupal, and setting up receipt and voucher lists with filters. Notifications, AI-based audits, and health checks were added to enhance functionality and compliance. After thorough testing and deployment via Azure, we provided a user manual to support the team in using the new solution effectively.

The implemented solution helped cut monthly receipt verification maintenance costs by 75% and reduced manual work by nearly 20times. Automating the receipt verification process also ensures consistent accuracy, freeing up resources that can be dedicated to more complex tasks. This enables JTI to efficiently handle increased sales volumes without escalating operational costs and support better productivity.

In addition to cost savings, the solution supports JTI’s growth ambitions, offering a robust framework that can easily adapt to new markets. By lowering the manual workload, the AI-based solution enables JTI to expand with minimal incremental cost. This enhanced efficiency supports the client in achieving sustainable, scalable growth across the Baltic region.
